Beginners
Aikido of Pittsburgh (AOP) welcomes beginning students regardless of previous martial arts experience. Many of our members trained previously in other martial arts and came to find training in Aikido to be uniquely satisfying. While it is important to be in good general physical condition, classes allow each individual to progress at his/her own pace. AOP provides dynamic training and support for all our members from young children to older adults. Because the successful application of Aikido technique is based on efficient movement and not raw physical strength, Aikido appeals to many people who may be intimidated by “hard” style martial arts. Aikido training consists of two aspects; waza (technique- empty hand and with weapons) and ukemi (falling). Practice is always conducted with a partner and the role of uke (one who attacks) and nage (one who receives) are reversed throughout class. AOP does not offer separate classes for beginners, but incorporates beginners into general classes with students of all rank. Beginners will be guided by senior students and instructors in learning the basics to enhance learning, enjoyment and injury prevention. We want incoming members to enjoy training as much as senior members, so we try to have a lot of fun while getting a vigorous workout and learning effective self-defense.
